Ethiopian Opal

Opal is a beautiful and attractive gemstone that often shows play of colours which is known as opalescence. Opals are available in different colours which includes red, blue, orange, black and white. Nearly 90% of world’s production of opal comes from Australia.

Ethiopian Opal is a unique kind of opal discovered in the early 1990’s in the Shewa province in Ethiopia. These have hues ranging from orange to red to chocolate brown. It is very fine and exhibit hydrophane properties. The latest of the Ethiopian opal was found in the Welo province in northern Ethiopia, about 550 km north of Addis Ababa. They show beautiful play of colours and look exceptionally beautiful set in different jewellery accessories.  They generally range from opaque to translucent, but most high quality pieces are transparent. They show an endless variety of base colours and patterns.

Ethiopian fire Opals range in colours from crystal clear to deep orange and every colour in between. Ethiopian Welo Opals can also be found in blue, pink and black.
